This course is accredited at Level 2 and 3 following completion of a portfolio. Learners will receive an Award in Knowledge and Practice to Support the Communication Skills of Children with ASD.
Course Content:
Session 1: Identify the processes involved in communication and understand the impact that ASD has on communication, learning and social development
Session 2: Understand sensory difficulties and learn to identify different sensory patterns and strategies to work with individuals who present in different ways
Session 3: Understand the role of non verbal communication and the importance of structure for pupils with ASD
Session 4: Use a range of visual support strategies in the learning environment and understand how memory develops and the use mind maps
Session 5: Developing vocabulary, sequencing and narrative skills and explore activities to facilitate the learning of descriptive vocabulary with an emphasis on emotional vocabulary
Session 6: Language scheme model which supports verbal reasoning skills, including why and how questions, inferences, sequencing and predicting
Session 7: Developing interaction using evidence based interaction strategies
Session 8: Developing pragmatic skills and learn to observe pupils with these difficulties
Session 9: Understand that individuals communicate through their behaviour and why communication difficulties might lead to challenging behaviour
Session 10: Present evidence of applying knowledge within the school environment
